Katy Perry sparked outrage on Twitter with a comment she made about Britney Spears’ infamous head-shaving incident.
Britney hit headlines back in 2007 when she was pictured taking a razor to her brunette hair at the lowest point of her mental health struggles.
But Katy used the unfortunate situation to make a joke when she was asked about her break from the music industry during an interview on the Grammy Awards red carpet on Sunday night (12Feb17).
As Ryan Seacrest quizzed her about the reason for her absence from music, Katy replied: “It’s called taking care of your mental health… I haven’t shaved my head yet.”
Ryan was quick to move on from the comment, but Katy then used the same quip during an interview with CBS on the red carpet – leading to a massive backlash from fans.
Angry fans then created the hashtag #KatyPerryIsOverParty, which trended on Twitter within minutes of being started.
“OK FINE I turned on the Grammys and Katy Perry was making a snide ‘Britney breakdown head-shaving’ reference & I’m not down with that,” one person tweeted, while another added: “I just lost all my respect for Katy Perry, well the litle (sic) respect I did have for her.”
The celebrity is over party hashtag has become popular in recent years, with Katy’s fans starting #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty when Taylor Swift’s ex Calvin Harris accused the singer of trying to “bury” him, “like Katy”.
Katy performed her new track Chained to the Rhythm at the Grammy Awards, and also spoke to Ryan about the musical inspirations and tone for her upcoming album.
“It’s got a wide range of feelings and emotions. I just feel a little but more conscious than I ever have,” she said of the record. “I’m so proud of it. It’s definitely a new era for me. I call it an era of purposeful pop. People are loving it. They’re dancing to it. They’re reading the lyrics. They’re ingesting it. They’re being revived. Maybe they’re waking up a little bit. Otherwise they’re dancing to the big fat beat.”
Katy also revealed she has one song that is a favourite for her, entitled Bon Appetit.
“I have one song called Bon Appetit that I love. It’s pretty sexual,” she smiled. “It’s pretty sexual. But I just imagine being on the beach with six Coronas on my hand.”
