Chainflower set to take the rock music world by storm

Focus One News Artist Spotlight – Chainflower

What got you into making music?

Kelly: My Dad is a jazz musician and I started piano at a young age. When I discovered rock soon after it transformed my life and have always been drawn to it. After experiencing stadium concerts and learning guitar, I knew that I wanted to be a musician. I started playing in cover and original bands in Santa Barbara then moved to LA and dove into the music scene.

Syd: I started singing and performing at age 9. When I was 12 I tagged along to my dad’s guitar lesson and decided that day that I wanted to learn how to play guitar myself. I learned as many chords as quickly as I could and started writing songs.

Raanen: My father and mother were both in the music industry so I was kind of born into it, but I wasn’t truly inspired till I saw Steve Jocz the drummer from Sum 41 in the “fat lip” music video.

What has been your best experience musically so far?

Kelly: Being able to create music and records with iconic artists like Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction), Chris Pitman (Guns N’ Roses) and Danny Carey (Tool) were definitely great experiences. Playing to thousands at the legendary Scream club where Jane’s Addiction, Guns N’ Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers also played was a high point. And creating, producing and performing in Chainflower has been absolutely amazing.

Syd: My best experience so far has been opening up for the Jonas Brothers on their arena tour. I had dreamed of playing in front of tens of thousands, but I had no idea it would be during my first tour ever!

Raanen: Ive been so lucky to play great shows all around the world, but opening for my favorite band Periphery has to be a highlight

Tell us about being a rock band in Hollywood, California ?

Kelly: Los Angeles is great because you have so many opportunities you won’t find anywhere else in the world. We love playing Hollywood and the Sunset Strip, and also Silver Lake, Echo Park and downtown LA. Most everyone that we get to work with are amazing, from club owners to door persons to sound crews, and especially our incredible fans.

Syd: As a kid I thought of Hollywood as the place where rockstars roamed the streets and legends played the local clubs. As an adult, I live in Hollywood and I have to tell you, it hasn’t lost its magic. I’m still very proud and excited to play clubs on the Sunset Strip and be a part of the LA music scene that hasn’t lost sight of the dream.

Raanen: It’s a double edged sword because there’s lots of opportunities but also lots of competition! I’d rather have to fight for those opportunities than not have them at all!

What are some wild rock n roll stories you have from being a band in the rock Mecca of the world?

Kelly: I’ve played on stage with strippers on the Sunset Strip which is always interesting. Parties at Danny Carey’s (Tool) hidden Loft have definitely been wild. Got to meet legendary guitarist and singer Adrian Belew (King Crimson) at one of the Loft parties, after seeing King Crimson play with Tool. Once before going on stage in Hollywood, we were at a liquor store across the street from the club with Perry, and someone in the store started shooting. Everyone in the store ducked down and the shooter ran out and down the street. Fortunately no one was hurt and we dashed out of there fast as hell back to the club. We went on stage right after and Perry told the crowd what just happened and they started cheering and whooping. Hollywood can be crazy!

Raanen: Most of them I can’t tell, due to legal repercussions, but getting to spend time partying with my heroes like Danny Carey of Tool is always a “pinch me” moment.

What current projects do you have available?

Kelly: Our new single Brave was just released worldwide on all platforms by Universal Music Group Distribution/Hood Associates.

Syd: We’ve just released our single “Brave” with a brand new lyric video to go along with it!

What shows have you done recently?

Kelly: Before the lockdown, we played The Viper Room, Los Globos and Whisky A Go Go. After that we’ve been taking the break to record and finish more singles scheduled for release later this summer.

Syd: Right before concerts were cancelled due to the pandemic we played in our hometown at The Viper Room. We have plans to get back on stage as soon as possible.

What makes you standout as a band?

Kelly: We’re a female fronted rock band that kicks ass like no other whether in the hottest clubs or stadiums. We can be heavy but also extremely beautiful, while spreading our modern day warrior message throughout the world. Our powerful sound starts with the unique songwriting talents of Syd and myself. Then my creative music arrangements get coupled with Syd’s amazing voice and Raanen’s killer drum skills. All these diamonds produce an unmatched sonic experience and electrifying live performance.

Syd: I think my formal vocal training and songwriting background with Kelly’s unlimited world of musical ideas and Raanan’s incredible, unmatched musicianship makes us a trio that definitely stands out among other bands.

Raanen: Syd’s incredible vocals and deep lyrics. Kelly’s unique approach to guitar and heavy riffs. And of course, my flawless drumming 😉 haha!

What are your up coming big moves to mention?

Kelly: We have streaming events coming up soon to announce. We’ll be releasing our next singles this year and playing key venues on the Sunset Strip and Orange County as soon as venues open. We’ll also be playing regional festivals, making appearances at Hollywood events, attending NAMM and playing SXSW when they open.

Syd: It goes without saying that we’ll be tearing up the stage as soon as we can. We also have our next single lined up for a release in the very near future.

Raanen: Taking over the world!
