For Stephen Hawking, ‘Everything’ is awesome about his Oscar-nominated flick

The Theory of Everything rolls into the Oscars Sunday with five nominations — including best picture, best original score and the two top acting categories — but the film’s already a winner for its subject: theoretical physicist, science superstar and frequent Big Bang Theory guest star Stephen Hawking.

This exclusive behind-the-scenes video from the making of Everything (out today on Blu-ray and DVD) looks at how Stephen Hawking and ex-wife Jane Wilde worked with the actors playing them on screen — Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones — and watched their life come alive. “It was as if I’d stepped through the looking glass, really,” Wilde says.

Redmayne felt as if he and the crew had the Hawking family stamp of approval — “It emboldened us and gave us the strength to do it” — and the mutual admiration society is in session with Hawking, too, who was impressed with the actor’s commitment. (One has to wonder what Hawking thought of Jupiter Ascending, though.)

The whole Theory project “reflects our struggle to bring up three children in normality despite my disability,” the scientist says.

“It’s a human interest story — success against the odds. It shows that disability can be no handicap.”
