EXCLUSIVE: “I walked in on them when we were in the recording studio,” Cam30 says. “Nate was in there with all the cats and they was all listening to Nate Dogg and I was like, ‘Yeah, this is real, this real right now.’”
“I thought it was a good time to get up on the West Coast,” Cam30 says in an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. “Nate, his dad’s birthday was last week (August 19), I thought it would be good to get together and do some West Coast vibe shit.”
Camryn “Cam30” Howard appeared as DJ Speed in Straight Outta Compton. Nathaniel “Lil Nate Dogg” Hale, Jr. is the son of the late music legend Nate Dogg. (Not to be confused with Nate Dogg’s other son Naijiel Hale.)
“Enjoy this record right now for, all the people working, trying to overlook the BS,” Cam30 says.
The pair linked up back in school and decided to collaborate to pay homage to Hip Hop legends.
“When we were doing the music video I walked in on them when we were in the recording studio,” Cam30 says. “Nate was in there with all the cats and they was all listening to Nate Dogg and I was like, ‘Yeah, this is real, this real right now.’ That was dope.”
Lil Nate Dogg says his father continues to inspire him.
“I love his music. It’s rare and inspirational, most of the music he did on his own,” Lil Nate Dogg says. “When it comes to all the features he did, that really speaks for itself. It’s a lot of songs I like, not really a favorite. I’ll probably play ‘Nobody Does It Better’ and ‘Hardest Man In Town’ those are probably my favorite but I listen to all of them.”
Lil Nate Dogg says there might be a sequel to Straight Outta Compton, which could feature his father.
Cam30, who appeared in the #1 movie in America, says filming was an incredible experience.
“I thought it was an amazing movie,” Cam30 says. “I’m glad that Hollywood is actually acknowledging, to have a biopic about young African-Americans being the number one movie is huge. I thought that all the characters played pretty well and it was just a dope experience. It was dope just to be around [Dr. Dre] and [Ice Cube] like everyday.”
“My sound is definitely R&B/Pop fusion,” Cam30 says. “I’ve got a lot of dark records now, this one is more the wavy vibe. I’ve got a lot of different sounds depending on how I’m feeling.”
Lil Nate Dogg has a project on the way and he plans to debut new songs at a performance on September 25. He has production from Fredwreck and Maybach Dice. Lil Nate Dogg says his style is a partial throwback to his father’s time, mixed with his own flavor.
“I’m more of the West Coast feel with some G-Funk in there mixed with my own tone and swag,” Lil Nate Dogg says. “Just be on the lookout for Lil Nate Dogg, I’m coming.”
