PHOENIX, Ariz. – Marshawn Lynch appeared at Super Bowl media day, setting a timer on his cell phone, wearing sunglasses and a backpack, and repeating a single message:
“I’m here so I won’t get fined.”
Lynch was guided through a flood of reporters to loud cheers to take his place at seat No. 6 for his media day press conference.
His entrance was reminiscent of a prize fighter making his way to the boxing ring.
His appearance lasted less than five minutes.
Lynch would only answer questions with adopted mantra.
At some points he varied it to add a “hey” in front of the statement, which he repeated over and over much to his own amusement – and that of many people in the crowd who cheered him. He did interrupt himself to say hi to someone.
“What’s up bud?” he shouted, the only variation from his repeated statement.
Deion Sanders even got in on the refusals, asking Lynch if the attention bothered him. Lynch hesitated before answering “I’m here so I won’t get fined, boss.”
Whether or not his latest act will result in an NFL fine remains unclear.
But Lynch didn’t stick around to find out. Instead of making his way back through the way he came, he slipped through a back passageway to escape Super Bowl 49 media day.
“That works,” said Russell Wilson when told what his running back said. “They can’t fine him for that right?”
