Groundhog Day musical to open in 2017

A musical version of Groundhog Day is headed to Broadway March 9, 2017.

The musical stage adaptation of the 1993 classicimage comedy, which starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, is scheduled to begin previews Jan. 23.

And the Broadway show will play over and over again, the same show every night.

No Broadway theater has been announced to house the show.

But the musical will have a book by Danny Rubin, who wrote the screenplay with Harold Ramis. In the film version, Murray plays a television weatherman who repeats each day exactly the same while covering Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, PA.

Tim Minchin will write the music and lyrics with choreography by Peter Darling. Matthew Warchus will direct. Set and costume design will be executed by Rob Howell.

This creative team all worked on the Broadway production of Matilda, which won four Tony awards and has been playing since 2013.
